The Strater Hotel, opened in 1888 during a mining boom in Durango, Colorado. Four years later, owner Henry M. Strater added another hotel, the Columbian, next door. Giraffe at the Phoenix Zoo in Phoenix, Arizona. Opened in 1962, it is the largest privately owned, nonprofit zoo in the United States. The zoo was founded by Robert Maytag, a member of the family that owned a famous appliance company. The Wigwam Motel on Route 66 in Holbrook, Arizona, where one can indeed “spend the night in a wigwam.” The brainchild of Frank Redford, this is one of what wer originally seven Wigwam Motels nationwide. America's first declared national monument (in 1906): Devils Tower in northeast Wyoming, also known by more benign names, including Bear Lodge, by indigenous American Indians. The National Park Service, which manages the attraction, declares each June as a "climb-free" period (with mixed success), out of respect for nearby tribes, who consider the monument sacred and loathe the “Devils Tower” name. Pete’s, a vintage gas station in Williams, Arizona, a town of just 3,000 or so residents but a well-known place among visitors from around the world. Known as “The Gateway to the Grand Canyon” 60 miles to the north, it is the southern terminus of the scenic railroad that takes tourists there and (in 1984) was also the last town on old Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40 across five southwest states. Hole-in-the-Wall is a remote pass in the Big Horn Mountains of Johnson County, Wyoming. In the late 19th century the Hole in the Wall Gang, a group of cattle rustlers and other outlaws that included Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang met at this cabin, built in 1883 and now preserved at the Old Trail Town museum. There was a time when the signs for every decent motel in Tucson shimmered in neon vibrance along the “Miracle Mile” entryway into town. Now all but a handful of them are dark or gone from those days when riding the “open road” was often a family adventure. The 1940s-vintage Tropicana “motor hotel” is long gone, but its sign and three more were rescued, rehabilitated, relocated, and put back on display in 2014 near the downtown campus of Pima Community College. The sixth-floor storeroom of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, where Lee Harvey Oswald, the presumed (by most) assassin of President John F. Kennedy, found a perch above Dealey Plaza, along which Kennedy, Texas governor John Connally, who was wounded, and their wives rode in an open touring car on Nov. 22, 1963. The Small Parlor in the northeast corner of the first floor in the 1856 section of the Texas Governor's Mansion in Austin. The cove molding and mantels with mirrors date to the Joseph D. Sayers Administration, 1899-1903. Built in 1854, the building was designed by prominent architect Abner Cook and has been the home of every Texas governor since 1856. The building is the oldest continuously inhabited house in Texas and fourth-oldest governor's mansion in the United States that has been continuously occupied by a chief executive. A young burrowing owl has found a haven — conviently provided in a piece of storm pipe at the Phoenix Zoo in Phoenix, Arizona. This species, which favors deserts and grasslands, is adept on the ground but does fly. It favors land operations in fall and winter, during breeding and chick-raising seasons. Formations in the "Cave Without a Name," located near Boerne in Kendall County, Texas. It has been commercially operated as a show cave and open for public tours since 1939. The cave went largely unnoticed again until the 1920s during the era of Prohibition when a small moonshine distillery was installed in the uppermost cavern. It again fell into obscurity until three local farm children rediscovered the sinkhole in 1935. The show cave received its name after its official opening in 1939, when a young boy suggested that the cave "was too beautiful to have a name." Original image from Carol M. Ethnolinguistic groups in Yunnan Province (1971)

Rock drawings, or pictographs, in a restricted area of Hueco Tanks State Historic Site near El Paso in El Paso County, Texas. The more than 200 "mask drawings" in the park -- the most in North America -- are the artistic legacy of different prehistoric peoples who, over several millennia, found water, feed, and shelter at this stone oasis in the desert. The "tanks" are geological depressions that catch rainwater, attracting animals and human settlement in the otherwise-dry high-desert surroundings. Tower of the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, Arizona, a small city and popular tourist attraction thanks to its red sandstone formations, which glow brilliant orange or red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The Roman Catholic chapel, which rises among these formations, was commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church. After an attempt to do so in Budapest, Hungary, was aborted due to the outbreak of World War II, she decided to build the church in her native region. Original image from Carol M. The Mexican artillery goes into action at the annual Battle of San Jacinto Festival and Battle Reenactment, a living-history retelling and demonstration of the historic Battle of San Jacinto. This was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the Texian Army engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican army in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes. Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, was captured the following day and held as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country.
